Latin America is a global leader in renewable energy, with renewables accounting for 60% of the region's electricity—twice the global average. The continent is rapidly advancing its wind and solar capabilities to meet ambitious renewable energy targets while boosting energy efficiency. Despite being one of the most climate-vulnerable regions, Latin America is taking decisive action to accelerate its clean energy transition. Solar PV systems, wind turbines, and hydropower are the most widely utilized renewable energy technologies. Brazil, Mexico, and Chile are leading the charge with large-scale projects underway. With abundant wind and solar resources, Latin America is poised to become a renewable energy giant in the coming years. Supportive policies, falling technology costs, and the urgent need to address climate change are driving the region's renewable energy boom.

Renewable energy is transforming the global energy landscape. Rapidly falling costs, supportive policies, and growing environmental concerns are driving unprecedented growth in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and bioenergy. Although the renewable energy transition is still in its early stages, significant untapped potential remains. By harnessing abundant, inexhaustible energy sources, these technologies are revolutionizing energy production and consumption.

From utility-scale solar farms and offshore wind turbines to rooftop solar panels and small-scale hydroelectric projects, renewable energy solutions are being deployed at all scales to meet diverse community needs. As costs continue to fall and innovation drives further efficiency gains, renewable energy is set to become the dominant source of electricity generation in many countries over the coming decades. With concerted efforts from governments, businesses, and civil society, renewable energy can power a sustainable future for all.

Renewable energy developers are at the forefront of the global transition to clean power by identifying, developing, and managing renewable energy projects. Their success lies in their ability to navigate the complex process of bringing a project from concept to reality.

The capacity of renewable energy in the world’s electricity generation mix continues to grow exponentially due to the collective expertise of private developers. This demonstrates the immense potential of renewable energy to power a sustainable future. As the demand for clean energy grows, the work of these developers will become increasingly essential in accelerating the deployment of wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and other renewable technologies.

Ontario Power Generation

Founded 1999CAN
Other Renewables
Type: Developer
As Ontario’s largest clean electricity generator, OPG produces about half of the province’s power using our diverse portfolio of publically-owned generating assets. Our nuclear stations are the clean-power workhorses in our fleet. We rely on them to produce stable base load energy with virtually no air pollution.

To maintain these valuable assets, we have started work on Canada's largest clean energy project - the mid-life refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (GS). We’re also investing in the Pickering Nuclear GS to ensure it continues safely operating until 2024.

In 2014, OPG burned its last piece of coal to make electricity. It was North America’s largest climate change action to date. We refueled two of our thermal stations with biomass, which provides Ontario with renewable, dispatchable power. It also optimized the use of existing public assets. We completed converting Atikokan GS in July 2014, and the Thunder Bay GS conversion to advanced biomass followed soon after in January 2015.

Hydroelectric power is a renewable resource that has fueled Ontario’s economic growth since the beginning of the 20th century. Today, it accounts for more than one-third of OPG’s electricity production. More than half of our hydro stations are over 80 years old, but thanks to ongoing maintenance and upgrades, they remain important contributors of clean, low-cost power in the province.

OPG works efficiently and to the highest standards of safety. We strive to deliver all projects on time and budget. We conduct all aspects of our business openly, honestly and with integrity. And we look beyond the bottom line to support the wellbeing of this province by generating power with purpose.

We work worldwide with a sustainable business model that generates value not only for the company but also for the communities where we work. We are constantly engaged in new projects and new technological challenges in order to innovate in the fields of research and production of electrical energy from renewable sources.

Our goal is ambitious: to work with a business model that combines competitiveness and sustainability, while respecting both people and the environment. We believe that renewable sources are an important tool to promote the competitiveness of the production systems of various countries and to guarantee the security of the energy supply. The widespread production of power from the wind, the sun, the water, and the heat from the earth contributes to greater energy independence for the countries, and at the same time supports the protection of the environment.

We provide clean energy to companies through our Power Purchase Agreements: customized and long-term contracts designed to reduce emissions and guide businesses towards a sustainable future.

Our commercial offer allows companies to strengthen their sustainability strategy all-around through additional services that benefit the client's activities, its stakeholders, and the environment.

We want to grow by increasing our installed capacity considerably and optimizing, for each country, the mix of technologies in order to take advantage of the specific characteristics of the area and make use of Enel's experience in the industry.
